seret and Simhat Torah
1. Tiqun haGeshem

On Shemini ‘Aseret, the minhag is to say the Tiqun haGeshem (prayer for rain) directly before the Musaf ‘Amida after Half-Qadish. The Hekhal is kept open for Tiqun haGeshem (1).

2. Haqafot on Simhat Torah

On the morning of Simhat Torah, the general minhag is to do the Haqafot after Hallel, before the Torah reading (2), though some do the Haqafot after Musaf.

3. “Besimana Tava” The general minhag is that, when Perashat Bereshit is read, the Torah reader says the words “beSimana Tava” before he begins reading the first ‘aliya, after the Kohen has said the blessing (3). However, some do not say these words (4).

(2) The reason for this is probably because the congregation is assembled and ready to precede with the rituals surrounding the Torah reading. (3) The reason for doing so is that one hopes that this reading marks the beginning of good signs and good mazal for the coming year; therefore one is permitted to say these words in between the blessing and the reading and doing so is not considered a hefseq; see responsa Rav Pe’alim (written by Ribi Yosef Hayim zt”l, the Ben Ish Hai). This is against the claims of Ribi Hayim Palaji zt”l (Mo’ed Lekhol Hai 85:25), who argues that the words constitute a hefseq and should not be said. (4) See Ribi Refael Barukh Toledano zt”l (Qitsur Shulhan ‘Arukh 500:10), who rules in accordance with Ribi Hayim Palaji zt”l in Mo’ed Lekhol Hai (see previous footnote).
