72) It is our custom to lengthen the utterance of the Dalet of “Ehad” at the end of the pasuq “Shema’ Yisrael” and we move our heads up down to the right and left, as if to the four corners of the world. After this we kiss our hands. This is because a person must have the proper intent on the word “Ehad,” Alef (1) = that Hashem is one, Het (8) = that He is found in the seven Heavens and in this world, and Dalet (4) = is the four corners of the earth, in order to illustrate this with our heads while still annunciating the Dalet, we lengthen it. 73) It is the custom that the Hazan reads the Qeriat Shema’ aloud while everyone quietly follows along altogether with the ta’amim (cantilations of the Torah). This is so that everyone can read it together and not have one man read it slower and another quicker especially since it is a miswa from the Torah. Through this, he is forcing the sibur to read it slowly word by word. To read more on the greatness behind reading the Shema’ slowly, see the Shulhan ‘Arukh (Siman 61) and the Kaf haHayim (ibid).

36) In some places they would hang a strand of garlic over the baby’s crib because in garlic there are many healing properties and segulot as well as protection and luck. The letters for garlic (SHUM = Shin Waw Mem) stand for SHemira UMazal (protection and luck).
