9. Eating Meat and Drinking Wine during the Nine Days
It is forbidden to eat meat or drink wine starting from Rosh Hodesh Ab up to and including the tenth day of Ab (1).
On Rosh Hodesh Ab itself, most partake of meat and wine (2) and before nightfall a meat meal called “R’foud L’hm” (the cessation of meat) is eaten, but some do not eat meat at all, namely those from Spanish Morocco (3).
On Shabat Hazon, the Shabat right before Tish’a Beab, some partake of meat and wine as is usual on Shabat throughout the year (4), while some do not eat meat at all (5). Most eat only meat bought from before Rosh Hodesh and salted, called “l’khli’ ” (6).

(2) This was the minhag in Fes and Sfrou among most other cities, as written in the sefer Debar Emet (Chapter 3) by Rbi Yedidya Monsonego zs”l; see Maran Hahida (Moré Ba’esba §233), Rbi Refael Barukh Toledano zs”l (ibid.), Rbi David ‘Obadia zs”l (Nahagu ha’Am), and Shemesh Umaghen (Heleq 3, Siman 54).
(3) See Rbi Yishaq Benoualid zs”l (Vayomer Yishaq, Tish’a Beab §2) and Rbi Yosef Benaim zs”l (Noheg beHokhma, p.30).
(4) See Rbi Yedidya Monsonego zs”l (Debar Emet §3), who says that this is the minhag of Moroccans whose ancestors fled Spain and Portugal during the Inquisition.
(5) See Rbi Yosef Benaim zs”l (ibid.) and Rbi David ‘Obadia zs”l (ibid.). This was the custom of some families in Marrakesh as well as the Kohanim of Debdou.
(6) See Rbi Yedidya Monsonego zs”l (ibid.), who adds that this was the custom of those who were not of Spanish origin, but whose ancestors had been in Morocco from before the Inquisition, including Mogador.
